Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery

Bariatric weight loss surgery is the commonly performed weight loss surgery for an extremely obese person. The surgery may be of different types such as gastric binding that involves the reducing the size of the stomach by implanting any foreign device, or it may be like sleeve gastrectomy or Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch that involves reducing the portion of the stomach.

Bariatric surgery are mainly recommended for the person whose BMI i.e. Body mass index is more than 35 or 40. The surgery promotes long-term weight loss and also found to provide recovery from several health related issues like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and other.

Types of Bariatric surgery

Bariatric surgery is classified into the following categories on the basis of their mode of procedure like:

Malabsorptive form of Surgery

Biliopancreatic diversion is the malabsorptive form of surgery that is also known as the Biliopancreatic surgery with duodenal switch (BPD/DS). The procedure involves reducing the size of the stomach and creating a small pouch. Then the lower part of the small intestine is connected to the pouch bypassing the duodenum. The patients are free to eat a regular diet as there is no restrictive component involved in this procedure. However, there may be nutritional deficiency due to malabsorptive absorption so it is advised to take vitamins and mineral supplement after the surgery.

Restrictive Form of Surgery

Adjustable gastric banding also known as lap band surgery is the restrictive form of surgery that is performed laparoscopically and involves restricting the stomach by using a silicon band. The band can be easily adjusted and reversed. This surgery promotes long-term weight loss by limiting the amount of food intake and is one of the safest and highly performed weight loss surgery.

Restrictive and Malabsorptive procedure

Another Bariatric weight loss surgery that includes both restrictive and malabsorptive component simultaneously is the Gastric bypass surgery and the duodenal switch.
Gastric bypass surgery also called Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is the most commonly performed Bariatric surgery for weight loss that involves creating a small gastric pouch bypassing the duodenum.
Duodenal switch surgery limits the amount of food intake and calorie absorption by reducing the size of the stomach and creating a short distal small intestine.

Benefits of Bariatric Surgery

Adjustable gastric banding also known as lap band surgery is the restrictive form of surgery that is performed laparoscopically and involves restricting the stomach by using a silicon band. The band can be easily adjusted and reversed. This surgery promotes long-term weight loss by limiting the amount of food intake and is one of the safest and highly performed weight loss surgery.

Complication of Bariatric Surgery

The complication of Bariatric surgery may be leakage, ulcer, bleeding, bowel obstruction, hernia, nausea and vomiting due to over-eating. Fatigue, diarrhea, dumping syndrome can occur after Roux-en-Y surgery. There may be nutritional deficiency after duodenal switch.
