Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch Weight Loss Surgery

Weight loss surgery has become very popular nowadays. There are three main forms of weight loss surgery: malabsorption surgery, restrictive surgery and combined malabsorptive and restrictive weight loss surgery. In malabsorptive surgery, patients are allowed to eat normally and then rerouting the food via digestive system so that only a small amount of calorie is absorbed by the food intake. In restrictive form of surgery, the stomach of the patient is reduced and the amount of calorie that patient can take is restricted. In malabsorptive or restrictive weight loss surgery, also known as duodenal switch surgery, both the amount of food intake and calorie absorption is highly restricted.

Biliopancreatic Surgery is basically of two types: Biliopancreatic diversion and Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch. In Biliopancreatic diversion, only half portion of the stomach is removed and the remaining portion of the stomach is remain intact with the lower portion of the small intestine. The BPDWS surgery is very much similar to biliopancreatic surgery. In this surgery, the stomach remains attached to the first part of the small intestine and the duodenum is separated from the remaining part of small intestine. The duodenum then attached with the lowest portion of small intestine bypassing the second and third part of the small intestine. The remaining portion of duodenum is then attached to the limb near the large intestine leaving a common channel that unites into the large intestine.
