Pros and cons of Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch gastric bypass

Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch gastric bypass also known as distal gastric bypass is a weight loss surgery that is basically recommended for a person whose BMI is 50 or greater than 50. This surgery has gained a lot of popularity in the recent year due to its excellent weight loss results than other gastric bypass surgery.

Biliopancreatic diversion surgery basically falls into two categories: Biliopancreatic diversion and Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch. In Biliopancreatic diversion, a part of the stomach is reduced and remaining part is connected to the smaller intestine. Due to this, patient feels full and this reduces the amount of food intake and calorie uptake.

Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch puts restriction on both amount of food intake and calorie absorption. In this procedure, stomach is reduced in size leaving the pyloric valve intact with the stomach that regulates the passes of food contents from stomach into the small intestine. The stomach is then connected to the upper part of the small intestine (duodenum) and the lower part of the small intestine is connected to the limb near the large intestine forming a common channel where food mixes.

Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch gastric bypass is a risky operation as it includes both restrictive and malabsorptive procedure. Despite of this, it is advantageous in some manner in comparison to other gastric bypass surgery. First, in Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch, there is least risk of dumping syndrome as the pyloric valve remains intact with the stomach. Second, it allows eating large portions of food as the stomach pouch is larger compared to other Bariatric surgery.

Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch gastric bypass or BPD-DS surgery has some side effects such as gas, pain, bloating, nausea, and vomiting and hair loss. After surgery patients may suffer from nutritional deficiency. However, by taking multivitamins and mineral supplements, the deficiency can be reduced.

Overall, Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch surgery is an effective weight loss surgery. On an average, patient can lose 70 to 80% of their excess weight after surgery by following nutritional guidelines and exercise.
