Weight loss surgery is not a miracle. The pouch or band is then filled with saline (chemical) to enlarge and contract the band. At the distal end of the pouch, a hole is left through which the food is passed into the gastrointestinal tract. This surgical procedure helps to slows down the passage of food and make person to feel full and thus limits the amount of food intake.

Like other surgery, there are some kinds of risks and complications are involved with the stomach stapling surgery. Therefore, following the surgery, patients are advised to pay attention on their diet. Patient should eat smaller amount of food, chew food slowly, and avoid eating foods high in sugar or fat contents.
Side effects of stomach stapling surgery include nausea; vomiting, diarrhea and heartburn whereas some long term side effects include nutritional deficiency, stroke and other. Therefore, patients are advised to take nutritional supplements after surgery. Beside that there are some risks associated with the surgery like pouch leakage, band slippage and deterioration. In such case, revision surgery is required.
Stomach stapling surgery is an effective surgery for a severely obese person, whose BMI is more that 40 or above. The maximum weight loss results occur during first two years following the surgery. However, weight loss results vary from person to person and also depends upon the person self motivation and eating and exercise habits.
